[DIF](https://idn.ceos.org/Aboutus/xml/dif/dif_v10.2.xsd) is a metadata interchange format for ESS data on a collection level (not for individual records). It is defined in the form of an XML Schema [@NASA-DIF-2023]. Its roots date back to the 1980s, but it remains an actively maintained standard, with having its last updated release in 2019 and still being supported by various of the selected re3data repositories ([Media 1](#med1)). However, as stated by NASA, some metadata providers are in favour of superseding DIF with the newer ISO 19915 standard.
### GeoNames
[GeoNames](https://www.geonames.org/about.html) is an online database of geographical names with worldwide coverage, published under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 License. Each place receives a unique identifier which at the same time is a resolvable IRI. Via a semantic web API, data about individual places can be retrieved in RDF, based on the [GeoNames ontology](https://www.geonames.org/ontology/ontology_v3.3.rdf). Other important public datasets make use of GeoNames, for example, the Research Organization Registry (ROR) only curates the GeoNames ID of the city where an organisation is located, and further relevant information (like the latitude and longitude coordinates of the city center, and the administrative area) is retrieved from GeoNames.
