Improvements
I did the exercise and I feel it is way too easy and there are some connections missing. Here are some proposals, you can take what you like or discuss with the group.
Improvements
- Make counting electrons and finding multiplicity a task. This is not hard, but requires them to think a bit about the system and actually check the input file instead of just pressing a button.
- Make reading output files a task. This is such a common task for us that I think it should be a part of a "theoretical experiment".
- Create a connection between Slater-Condon-Parameterization and the calculated states.
- Extra questions: What would be the color of an octahedral and tetrahedral Mn2+ complex? Since we talk so much about forbidden transitions.
- Avoid symmetry labels when denoting configurations. We do not use symmetry here at all
- Add an oral exam before the exercise. This is standard for this module, so we should stick to the established practice.
Errata
- Section "Excitation energies" change "entitled" to "titled"
- Section "Basic principles" fix italic font
